Dockter recognized for academic excellence

This year's North Dakota Academic All-State teams have been selected, and New Rockford-Sheyenne's Kyria Dockter is among those recognized with an honorable mention.

All totaled, 202 high schoolers in North Dakota were nominated by their school's principal and went on to compete for statewide recognition in either the Class A or Class B divisions.

Each student was named to either the Gold, Silver, Bronze or Honorable Mention team. Dockter, as a member of the Honorable Mention team, will receive a certificate of merit from the North Dakota Association of Secondary School Principals (NDASSP).

"Student selection is based on grade-point averages, ACT or SAT scores, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and leadership qualities," states a press release from the NDASSP.

Dockter is currently completing her senior year at NR-S, and is very involved at school as both an athlete and student leader.

She's a member of the FCCLA, concert choir, archery, volleyball, Sources of Strength, the National Honor Society and the student council, and through it all she maintains excellent grades.

Avolt Baumbach, the high school principal at NR-S who nominated her, said she's an outstanding student.

"Kyria is a great kid, a great student," said Baumbach. "She's added a lot to our school and she takes part in a lot of our extracurriculars. ... I can't say enough of how good of a student she is. She's always been a leader for us."

A number of other local students were also named to this year's North Dakota Class B All-State team.

Max Beumer of Carrington and Olivia Larson of Griggs County were named to the Gold Team, Emma Dockter of Harvey was named to the Silver Team, and Kaylee Knatterud of Maddock, Lilly Bohl of Pingree-Buchanan and Isabel Schmidt of Medina were named to the Honorable Mention Team.

Members of the Class B gold, silver and bronze teams will also be awarded a certificate of merit by the NDASSP, in addition to being presented a medallion by WDAY and Forum Communications during the televised "Parade of Academic Champions" at the Class B Boys Basketball Tournament in Bismarck on Friday, March 17.
