Rockets slay the Dragons

NR-S takes seventh region win, recognize Myhre for accomplishments

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hosted their final regular season game on Monday, Feb. 13 against the Dunseith Lady Dragons.

Before the start of the game, NR-S senior, Madisen Myhre, was recognized for her time spent on the court with the Rockets. Congratulations on a great season, Madi!

With the Lady Dragons' overall record being 2-16, the Rockets knew they had a great chance of earning one more Super Region 4 victory.

With a slow but steady start by both teams, the Rockets took a 5-point lead after the first quarter.

And from then on, the Rockets could not be stopped. With huge steals from Kelsie Belquist and Kaiya O'Connor, followed by breakaways to the basket, the Rockets took a 36-18 lead at the end of the first half.

The Rockets kept pushing. With four more field goals by Belquist, the Rockets added another 20 points to their score. But the Lady Dragons began to fight back. With huge 3-point shots by Mikenzie McCloud and Olivia Gladue, the Lady Dragons had scored a total of 12 points in the third quarter, bringing their score up to 30.

The Rockets had over a 30-point lead going into the fourth quarter, which meant playing time for the non-starters.

With a steal and a breakaway by NR-S junior Lucy Meier, the Rockets had defeated the Lady Dragons 73-39, taking their seventh region win of the season.

Scoring in double digits for the Rockets were Belquist with 28, Ava Peterson with 13, Kaiya O'Connor with 12, and Lora Wobbema with 10.

Lead scorer for the Lady Dragons was McCloud with a total of 11.

The Rockets junior varsity team was defeated by the Lady Dragons 39-47. The junior varsity team finished their season 3-11 overall.

The Super Region 4 Tournament will be held at Devils Lake High School. The Rockets will play the final game of the night on Monday, Feb. 20 against the winners of the region play-in game on Friday, Feb. 16 between the Benson County Wildcats and the Warwick Warriors.
