Rockets lose three in a row despite close games
The New Rockford-Sheyenne boys' basketball team hosted the Super Region 4 Lakota Raiders on Thursday, Feb. 2.
Before we get into the varsity game, there is something important to talk about from the junior varsity game.
NR-S senior, Haydon Meier, stepped onto the court after suffering from a tibia/fibula fracture that occurred during the NR-S versus North Star football game on September 23, 2022.
Meier has put in many months of rehab and lots of hard work to be able to be back on the court, even if it's mainly court time during the junior varsity game. Rocket fans are glad to see you back on the court, Haydon!
Now, let's get back to the varsity game.
The Raiders took off in the first quarter, taking a 5-point lead from 3-pointers by Zach Gibson and Jaxon Baumgarn.
But the Rockets began to fight come the second quarter. The Rockets scored a total of 21 points in quarter two, to tie the game up to 33-33.
Which team will keep the momentum? Rockets or Raiders? Let's find out.
The Rockets and Raiders were neck and neck in the third quarter, with the Raiders only leading by 1. The score was now 48-47.
Just eight more minutes.
The Raiders scored a total of 16 points in the fourth quarter, holding the Rockets to only 11.
During the end of the fourth quarter, NR-S freshman, Easton Simon, and Lakota junior, Ross Thompson, collided after attempting to rebound a ball. After the collision, Simon was found holding his shoulder in pain; he later found out that he had suffered a hairline fracture.
The Raiders defeated the Rockets 64-58.
Lead scorers for the Raiders were Gibson with 22, Landon Sundeen with 13, Baumgarn with 11 and Thompson with 10.
Scoring in double digits for the Rockets were Simon with 13, Bennett Meier with 11 and Kailar Jacobson with 10.

NR-S vs Enderlin
Friday, Feb. 3
On Friday, Feb. 3, the Rockets traveled to Enderlin to take on the Enderlin Eagles.
The Rockets came into this game with the confidence to win.
Without Easton Simon on the court, some Rockets' players had to step up and be shooters. And that's what they did.
The Rockets kept up with the Eagles quite well in the first quarter. With only four seconds left on the clock, Bennett Meier launched the ball from a few steps past the opponents 3-point line, to swish the ball at the buzzer. This brought the score to 21-20, in favor of the Eagles.
Enderlin senior Carson Bartholomay swished four 3-pointers in the second quarter, to take a 2-point lead over the Rockets.
And this wasn't the last time fans saw Bartholomay scoring.
Neither the Rockets nor the Eagles were giving up in the second half.
To start off the second half, Kailar Jacobson stole the ball while on defense and launched the ball to Trevor Waldo, where he was able to leap up and dunk the ball. Rocket fans roared with cheers.
Jacobson was a key player in the second half for the Rockets. In just the third quarter, he scored six points from driving to the basket. The Rockets still were 2 points short after the third quarter.
With four more field goals and two free throws by Bartholomay, the Eagles had defeated the Rockets 74-69.
Bartholomay led the Eagles, scoring a total of 50 points. Bartholomay surpassed an Enderlin school record, which was set by Mike Opheim back in 1991, where he scored 44 points. Congrats Carson!
Top scorers for the Rockets were Jacobson with 19, Lucas Yri and B. Meier with 14 each, and Easton Benz with 10.

The Rockets had met up with the Dragons earlier in the season for the Rugby Jamboree back in December, where they lost 53-70.
Frankly, this second matchup with the Dragons went the same way as the first.
In the first quarter, 3-pointers were the name of the game. The Rockets swished four, with the Dragons hitting three. But the Dragons kept a 2-point lead over the Rockets.
The Dragons took the second quarter, scoring 23 points to the Rockets 17. At the half, the Rockets were down by eight.
And the Dragons just kept on pushing in the second half. With two 3-pointers by Jeremy Laducer, the Dragons were now ahead 63-41. The Rockets only scored a total of 10 points in the third quarter.
The Rockets came back fighting in the fourth quarter, with two 3-point shots by NR-S sophomore, Brody Weisenburger. But with the Dragons scoring 13 more points, the Rockets fell short, taking another 17-point loss to the Dragons.
