Growing pains: Rockets drop pair of losses to Region opponents

Last week, New Rockford-Sheyenne was handed a couple of losses by regional teams, beginning with the North Prairie Cougars.

The Cougars arrived in New Rockford on Thursday, Jan. 26 boasting an 11-2 overall record, and they showed the Rockets how they earned such a strong record that evening.

North Prairie relied on a trio of excellent shooters – Blake Mattson, Jeffery Rosinski and Mitchell Leas – to do most of their scoring. The three of them accounted for all of their teams' first-quarter points, and by the end of the night, had scored 73 percent of the team's points.

Mitchell Leas, with debilitating accuracy from beyond the arc, was the game's lead scorer with 20 points. Mattson and Rosinski scored 17 and 16, respectively.

The Rockets, meanwhile, struggled to keep up on offense. Their leading scorer, again, was Easton Simon, but he finished the night with only 12 points and was the only Rocket to score double digits.

By halftime, the Rockets were only barely within touching distance of the lead, going into the locker rooms down by 11. The gap only widened in the second half, however, and NR-S could only watch as the Cougars strolled to their 12th victory of the season with a final score of 48-73.

The Rockets were hoping to rebound on the road against the North Star Bearcats the following Monday, on Jan. 30.

However, like the Cougars, the Bearcats are also a top team within Region 4, and they simply outclassed the Rockets Monday night.

Throughout this season, against older and more experienced competition, NR-S has struggled with turnovers and rebounds, and consequently, the Rockets' offensive struggles continued against North Star.

Yet again, Simon was the Rockets' only player to score in the double digits with 13 points, and by halftime, they were staring down a 22-point deficit. The rest of the night was largely a formality.

Behind leading scorers Parker Simon and Dane Hagler, who scored 17 and 16 points respectively, the Cougars cruised to a dominant 70-38 victory.

This very young NR-S Rockets team has shown some impressive growth since beginning the year winless, but last week's losses, which brought their overall record to 2-9, illustrate just how much further they still have to grow.

On Thursday, Feb. 2, the Rockets looked to return to winning ways against the 5-7 Lakota Raiders. That game will be covered in the next edition of the Transcript.
