CHS girls 2nd, boys 9th at Storhaug

Hoggart for boys, girls' Wendel take weight crowns in Lisbon

The Carrington wrestling teams had numerous placers emerge from the two days of mat mayhem at the Nick Storhaug Invitational at Lisbon High School Friday and Saturday, January 20-21.

Two individual championships, one apiece on the boys’ and girls’ sides, came the way of the Cards in the two-day event.

The CHS girls scored 153 team points to place second, 18 points behind the Mandan Braves, and the boys took ninth with 89.5 points as the home Broncos won the meet, 260-220, over runner-up finisher South Border.

Trace Hoggarth had a dominant showing at 120 pounds with a 48-0 match point total in four victories. Hoggarth had two technical falls in his first two rounds, and got shutout wins of 7-0 and 9-0 in the semifinal and championship over Central Cass’s Josiah Crandall and Kruiser Burns of Grafton, respectively.

In the 138-pound class, Corbin Clifton made the finals with three straight wins before running into a quality Valley City opponent in 31-2 Koye Grebel, falling by technical fall by a 17-2 final score.

Dru Carr (113) and Kael Kovar (152) both placed fifth in their brackets, and Callen Garber (195) was seventh.

In the girls’ tourney, Kennedy Wendel was the Cards’ only champion at 135 pounds, taking three pins in the process.

All finishing with runner-up status were Taya Lura (105) and Ashley Lindberg (250), and third place hardware went to Kylie Skadberg at 115 and Khendra Garcia at 140.

Kendall Kovar (125), Trisa Schroeder (145) and Jyllian Parker (170) all made the top four in their brackets.

Next up for the Cardinal boys will be the East-West Tournament in New Salem Friday-Saturday, January 27-28. It is the final regular season meet before the start of regional and state competitions.

The CHS girls will be traveling to Casselton to take on the Central Cass Squirrels in an East Region dual starting at 7 p.m.
