Beulah Miners defeat Rockets at Girls Hoopster Classic

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets made the trek to Minot on Friday, Dec. 30 to compete in the Girls' Hoopster Classic. The varsity and junior varsity Rockets played against the Beulah Miners.

Junior varsity took to the court first.

The Rockets had a slow start with only four points scored in the first quarter between Addison Wallace and Trysta Thumb.

The second quarter became more intense, with multiple steals by Katie Allmaras, which led to more points scored by the Rockets. In the second, the Rockets scored a total of 11 points. The Miners only led by one.

In the second half, the Miners took off and frankly, the Rockets did not.

The Miners scored 22 points in the third quarter, with nine points coming from Laisha Martens.

The Rockets, however, only scored four points, with two each coming from Tillie Swart and Emmie Belquist. The Rockets were now down 38-19.

And similar to the second quarter, the Rockets came back fighting, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter. But it wasn't enough to stop the Miners. The Rockets were defeated 30-43.

Lead scorers for the Rockets were Thumb with eight and Wallace with six.

As for the Miners, Malayah Williams led the team with 11 points, followed by Martens with nine.

The varsity contest was quite similar to the junior varsity game.

The Miners flew out of the gates to score 20 points in the first quarter, led by Cali Steffan and Shea Barron. NR-S junior, Lora Wobbema, was the lone scorer for the Rockets in the first quarter, with two points.

The Rockets seemed to wake up more in the second quarter, but just couldn't keep up with the Miners. The Rockets scored eight points to the Miners 13 points in the second. At the half, the Miners led 33-10.

The second half of the game was quite similar to the first. The Rockets scored five points in the third quarter, with two from Madisen Myhre and three from Kelsie Belquist.

But there was no stopping the Miners. Steffan drained her fourth 3-pointer of the day, Barron swished two more field goals and Jenna Koppelsloen also swished a 3-pointer. The Miners now led 47-15.

With many drives to the basket by Belquist, she was sent to the line to shoot 3-for-6, plus a field goal. Kaiya O'Connor was also able to swish three field goals, but it just wasn't enough to come near the Miners.

The Rockets were defeated 56-28.

O'Connor led the Rockets with a total of 10 points, followed by Belquist with eight.

Lead scorers for the Miners were Steffan with 16 and Barron with 12.
