Making history: Rockets get 3-1 win over Cardinals, earn first state appearance

Tournament time. These are the games that really matter during the volleyball season.

New Rockford-Sheyenne entered the Region 4 tournament as the No. 2 seed in the bracket, just behind the Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich Cardinals.

After receiving a first round bye, the Rockets were set to play the Nelson County Chargers in the quarterfinals round.

The Rockets breezed past the Chargers in the first set 25-11. Sets two and three weren't as breezy.

The Chargers began to fight back in the second set, but were only able to secure 16 points before the Rockets got to 25.

The third set brought many hitting and passing errors for the Rockets, which aided in many points for the Chargers. Halfway through the third set, the Chargers even had a 2-point lead over the Rockets.

But the Chargers didn't have enough momentum to beat the Rockets. The Chargers were defeated 25-22 and dropped out of the Region 4 Tournament. Here's a short recap of day 1 of the Region 4 Tournament.

The LA/E/M Cardinals swept the Four Winds/Minnewaukan Lady Indians 3-0 (25-3, 25-7, 25-10), to move on to the semifinals.

Game 4 included the North Star Bearcats and the Harvey/Wells County Hornets. The Bearcats conquered the Hornets in three (25-18, 25-19, 25-15), to move on to play the Cardinals in the semifinals round. During the second set of this match, North Star middle hitter Payton Harpestad hit her 500th kill. Congrats Payton!

The final game of the night was between the North Prairie Cougars and the Benson County Wildcats. The Cougars clawed their way past the Wildcats (25-9, 25-14, 25-14) to earn a chance in the semifinals against the Rockets. 1,000 digs were major for two athletes during this matchup. Jaylen Anderson from Benson County and Rylee Hanlan from North Prairie each secured their 1,000th dig. Congratulations to Jaylen and Rylee!

Region 4 Volleyball tournament day two. Only four teams left in the semifinals: New Rockford-Sheyenne, North Prairie, North Star and Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich.

To kick off night two the LA/E/M Cardinals and the North Star Bearcats battled it out. The Cardinals overcame the Bearcats 3-0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-17), earning a chance at the region championship match.

The second and final match of the night included the NR-S Rockets and the North Prairie Cougars. This matchup kept fans on their toes.

The Cougars capsized on the Rockets in the first set, taking a 25-22 win. But never fear, the Rockets bounced back and took the Cougars down 25-14 in the second set.

The Rockets and Cougars were all tied up.

Set three landed in the Rockets favor yet again, with a 25-22 win. The Cougars came crawling back in the fourth set to take the Rockets down 25-23.

All tied up once more, the teams settled in for the fifth and final set of the evening.

The Rockets and Cougars rallied point-by-point in this set. A tip to the front corner by Lora Wobbema concluded the match. The Rockets defeated the Cougars 15-12, earning their first ever chance at the championship round.

Kelsie Belquist and Ava Peterson each set personal match records. Belquist scored a total of 40 kills against the Cougars and Peterson scored 55 assists. Congrats Kelsie and Ava!

With impending weather, the Region 4 Tourney games were pushed ahead to Wednesday, Nov. 9, starting at 4 p.m.

The consolation game included the North Prairie Cougars and the North Star Bearcats, where the Bearcats conquered, taking down the Cougars 3-2 (25-23, 11-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12). The Bearcats received third place and the Cougars received fourth place. Congrats to both.

Championship time. Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich made it back to the championship round for the eighth consecutive time, whereas this was New Rockford-Sheyenne's first time ever in history.

The game started off slowly for the Rockets, with minor errors coming from the passers. But this wasn't how the Rockets came to play.

After the jitters of playing in the championship round faded, the Rockets played their best game of the season. Belquist went kill for kill against LA/E/M middle hitter Cora Badding.

A key player for the Rockets was NR-S junior, Lora Wobbema. From kills to blocks, Wobbema was there and she wasn't leaving anytime soon.

Nearly 90 percent of the Cardinals serves were spot-served to NR-S sophomore, Kaiya O'Connor. Although some passes weren't easy, O'Connor was found diving after each and every one.

The first set ended with a huge double block on Badding from Lucy Meier and Peterson. The Rockets took set one 25-23. This set the momentum for not only the Rockets players, but also the Rocket fans.

Set two was a different story for the Rockets. Although they kept up with the Cardinals, they were unable to win. LA/E/M defeated the Rockets 25-19 in the second set, but this set loss didn't seem to affect the Rockets.

NR-S came back swinging in the third set, with big kills yet again from Belquist and Wobbema. With each kill, the gym was filled with cheers from not only NR-S fans, but also Nelson County fans.

The Rockets pulled away with a 25-22 win in the third set, to lead the Cardinals 2-1. Will they win the next set and become the Region 4 champs? Or will they lose and play into set five?

Did you guess the first one? If so, reader, you were very correct.

The Rockets capsized the Cardinals in the fourth set, with a big kill coming from Meier.

Rocket players and fans stormed the court as they won their first Region 4 championship game. Fans were filled with excitement, and some were even crying tears of joy.

New Rockford-Sheyenne will compete in their first ever Class B State Volleyball Tournament on November 17-19. Shocking, right?

This team and the coaches have gone through a lot this season, with many rotation and position changes.

After the championship game ended, awards were given out.

The announcer started off with the All Region 4 Team. The 2022 All Region 4 team consists of Jaylen Anderson and Aubrey Kenner, Benson County; Lanehya Malnourie, Four Winds/Minnewaukan; Emma Dockter and Larissa Arnold, Harvey/Wells County; Cora Badding, Jaya Henderson, Jalynn Swanson and Halle Jabs, Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich; Krista Lippert and Brandi Lippert, Nelson County; Madisen Myhre, Kelsie Belquist and Kaiya O'Connor, New Rockford-Sheyenne; Carmen Elick, Lidia Motl and Madison Samuelson, North Prairie; Jorie Ahlberg, Payton Harpestad and Elle Nicholas, North Star.
