Allmaras, Gehrtz elected to county seats

Nearly a thousand Eddy County residents cast their ballots in this year’s midterm election, and the results are officially in.

Among the local races in Eddy County, only the election for county commission was contested. The top two vote getters earned seats on the commission, and in the end, the general election results turned out very similarly to those of the primary.

Jamie Allmaras was once again the big winner, taking 32.50 percent of the vote. This was Allmaras’ first run for public office, and his first 4-year term as commissioner will begin the day of the commission’s next regular meeting on Dec. 12.

With 23.84 percent of the vote, incumbent Dave Gehrtz finished second in voting and retained his seat at the commissioners’ table. Gehrtz finished only slightly ahead of Dale Rosenberg, who came in third with 21.85 percent of the vote.

Jeff Pfau finished fourth in voting with 17.57 percent of the final vote tally.

Meanwhile, a number of uncontested county races were also decided. Patty Williams, auditor; Ashley Lies, state’s attorney; Kathy Anderson, treasurer; and Paul Lies, sheriff, have all been elected to another term in their current positions.

Tiffany Harr has been elected to her first term as Eddy County’s recorder/clerk of district court, and the New Rockford Transcript has been reelected the county’s official newspaper for another four years.

With 953 ballots cast of 1,755 eligible voters, Eddy County outpaced the overall statewide turnout in North Dakota - 54.30 percent participation in Eddy County compared to North Dakota’s 42.83 percent.

However, voter turnout in Eddy County was the lowest it’s been in at least a decade. In the last 10 years, 2014 was the previous low-water mark for voter turnout, with 1,112 votes cast in that year’s midterms.

Eddy County reached a peak for voter turnout in 2020, with 1,274 Eddy County residents casting their vote. And in the most recent midterm elections in 2018, 1,264 residents cast a ballot.

The election results will be certified at the canvassing meeting on Monday, Nov. 21 at 9 a.m.

In statewide races, meanwhile, North Dakotans voted overwhelmingly in favor (63.42%) of Initiated Constitutional Measure No. 1, creating new term limits for the N.D. governor and legislature. Initiated Statutory Measure No. 2, however, was voted down (54.95% to 45.05%), meaning recreational marijuana will not be legalized in North Dakota.

In District 15, Republican Judy Estenson handily defeated Democratic-NPL candidate Collette Brown for state senate (65.38% to 33.75%), and Kathy Frelich and Dennis Johnson emerged as the district’s two representatives, defeating Democratic-NPL candidate Heath Lawrence-Skadsem.

Shown below are more of the unofficial results from Tuesday’s general election as posted on the North Dakota Secretary of State’s website on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
