Rockets travel to Drake and sweep the Raiders 3-0

The Rockets put a damper on Homecoming festivities at Drake-Anamoose High School Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Rockets made a clean sweep, as all three NR-S squads defeated the Drake-Anamoose Raiders in non-regional volleyball action.

The Rockets and Raiders volleyed back and forth to start the first match, then the Rockets jumped out ahead to the tune of 20-11. The Raiders fought back, scoring five unanswered points. Each team then took its turn scoring four straight to make the score 24-20. The first set ended in the Rockets' favor, 25-20, on a hitting error by Jamie Lemer, senior outside hitter for the Raiders.

Drake-Anamoose scored the first three points in the second set due to NR-S errors. The Rockets got back into the game and matched the Raiders' intensity level. When the score hit 15-13, the Rockets rallied offensively and finished off the set with a 10-5 run. Contributors to the offensive attack were Madi Myhre and Lora Wobbema, each with two kills. Kaiya O'Connor earned three points for the Rockets with two aces and a kill. The set ended 25-17 after a pair of service errors, one from each team.

The third set was a bit like the second, with the Raiders taking a 4-1 lead. After working to tie up the score at five apiece, the Rockets rallied again, and scored eight of the next 10.

Drake-Anamoose wasn't ready to give up just yet, though. They took advantage of a sudden loss of focus on the part of the Rockets, and outscored the visitors 13-3 and came within two points. After a time out called by Rocket head coach Sara Myhre, the momentum shifted back to the Rockets. Kelsie Belquist had a kill and an ace, and Madi Myhre closed it out with a kill. The Rockets came home with a straight-set win.

The Rocket offense was led by Kelsie Belquist, with 17 kills in the three sets. Setter Kaiya O'Connor had 27 assists in the contest. Belquist also led the defense, with eight digs. Junior middle hitter Lora Wobbema had her best showing of the season, matching senior Madi Myhre's five kills. Lucy Meier led the team with two blocks.

The junior varsity Rockets also defeated the Raiders in three straight, with set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 15-10. In the junior high contest, the Rockets won 2-1, as the Raiders took the second. Set scores not available.
