Doris Griffin’s interesting barnyard story continues: “In addition to the previous 12 chicks, there is now another batch. Two hens were both sitting on the same nest. Sometimes that works out, but not always. Sometimes they can’t decide who stays with the yet unhatched eggs and who leaves the nest with the hatchlings. Two days ago, the hens showed up with one hen having six chicks and the other had four and things were working out well. I cleaned out the nest and removed the six unhatched eggs and put them in an empty feed sack that I was using for trash. Last night as I was doing evening chores, I heard a chick chirping and started looking for it. After 45 minutes of searching everywhere, I had it narrowed down to maybe the feed sack. Upon looking in, I couldn’t see or hear anything. Chicks instinctively know when in danger and they hunker down and sit quietly. Looking elsewhere with no success, I tried the feed sack again and sure enough there was a little yellow chick standing there so freshly hatched it wasn’t completely dry yet. I thought I would try to add it to the others. Sometimes that works and sometimes not. It seemed to work this time as this morning, one hen had seven chicks and the other still had her four.
