Sox soar over hawks

Post #30 leaps for victory, securing first win since Mid-Summer Classic

On Thursday, July 7, New Rockford Post #30 hosted a double header against the Jamestown Hawks, and earned a much needed sweep after suffering close defeats in the prior days.

For a time, however, Post #30 seemed destined for another loss as the first of Thursday's games got underway.

The Hawks opened the game with four earned runs against Black Sox starting pitcher Luke Yri, to which New Rockford found no response in the bottom of the inning.

With a comfortable 4-0 lead entering inning No. 2, Jamestown seemed confident of victory. However, they soon found themselves stymied by the pitcher they'd just had success against the inning prior.

Despite his early woes, Yri went on to pitch the remainder of Thursday's first game, and didn't allow a single Hawks runner to add to their score.

Meanwhile, the Black Sox offense kicked into high gear.

After narrowing the lead to just two in the second inning, New Rockford's offense exploded for a nine-run third inning, opening an 11-4 advantage. They went on to add another three runs in the bottom of the sixth, which gave them 14 runs and triggered the 10-run mercy rule.

Particularly strong from behind the plate was right fielder Kadon Hilbert, who knocked in three RBIs and crossed the plate twice himself, propelling his team to their first win since the Mid-Summer Classic.

Game No. 2 got off to a much better start for New Rockford, as they opened an early 2-0 lead after the first inning, and they cruised along relatively comfortably on defense.

Starting pitcher Keaton Cudworth allowed just five hits in 6.2 innings of work, and hadn't allowed a single run entering the sixth inning.

Just then, a costly error on defense allowed two Jamestown runners to cross home plate and tie the game.

But thankfully for the Sox, their offense, which had been kept quiet after the first inning, responded with a five-run outburst in the seventh, propelling them to their second win of the day.
