Post #30 defeated by Rattlers, take two losses and one win at Jamestown/Valley City Legion Tournament

From Friday, June 24, through Sunday, June 26, a dozen Legion baseball teams from across the region participated in the 2022 Mid-Summer Classic in Jamestown and Valley City.

Nearby teams taking part were New Rockford Post #30 and Carrington Post #25, who both had similarly up-and-down weekends.

On the first day, New Rockford Post #30 took on Jamestown Post #14 Blues, and despite a strong comeback effort, lost 5-4 to fall painfully short of escaping with an early victory.

Day two saw Post #30 take on Park River Post #147 for a chance to at least move on to the consolation bracket. However, Black Sox starting pitcher, Keaton Cudworth, had a disastrous first two innings, giving up four runs in the first and another two in the second.

Cudworth, to his credit, stopped the bleeding there, and didn't allow another Post #147 player to cross home plate the rest of the game. On offense, however, the Black Sox couldn't gather enough steam to mount a comeback.

They managed to score once in the fifth and twice more in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late, ending the game at 6-3 and ending their chances of a run in the consolation or championship brackets.

However, they still had one more game, this time against the Jamestown Hawks.

Unlike their previous two outings, the Black Sox established an early lead over the Hawks and kept it. Four runs in the second and another two in the third were all they ended up needing, but the offense didn't stop there.

Post #30 further tightened their grip on Sunday's game with five more runs in the fifth and three in the seventh, thanks, in large part, to five Hawks' errors.

Black Sox starting pitcher, Koby Duda, went 6.1 innings and allowed just one earned versus the Hawks, all while striking out 11 batters. The combination of strong pitching and an advantageous offense allowed for a dominant 14-4 victory.

Carrington Post #25, meanwhile, won their first game of the tournament via the 10-run mercy rule, but lost their second game via that same rule. In the consolation tournament they fell to Langdon 12-8.

On Sunday, Valley City Post #60 defeated Casselton Post #15 by a score of 13-1 to take the championship.

Later that week, on Tuesday, June 29, the Black Sox took on the Ashley/Linton/Wishek Rattlers on the road, and once again suffered a nail-biting loss.

Post #30 was poised to go home with a win, up 3-2 in the seventh, but a tying run in the bottom of the inning sent the game into extra innings.

The Rattlers finally ended it in the bottom of the ninth with three runs, concluding the game at 6-3 for another Black Sox defeat.
