"Little Shop of Horrors" comes alive on summer DPRCA stage

It's just your average downtown flower shop, the place you go when you need a bouquet for someone you love or a corsage for a special occasion. Or is it?

DPRCA presents "Little Shop of Horrors," where the music is familiar and fun, and the storyline holds a bit of a surprise.

"Little Shop of Horrors," is a comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and book by Howard Ashman. The story follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that subsists on a very specific and unusual diet. The plant makes its appearance one day in a flower shop window, having arrived from another planet. It immediately begins to grow, to look around itself, to attract attention and to satiate its appetite. It also changes the lives of the three people who work in the store.

The musical is loosely based on the low-budget 1960 B-movie of the same title. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, "Skid Row (Downtown)", "Somewhere That's Green", and "Suddenly, Seymour."

The show runs Wednesday, July 6 - Sunday, August 7 at the Old Church Theatre in New Rockford. Weekday performances start at 7:30 p.m., while the Saturday and Sunday matinees start at 2:30 p.m. In the final week, there is a Tuesday showing.

Micah Nicolai, a 2018 graduate of New Rockford-Sheyenne, returns to the DPRCA stage for this special summer mainstage production as Audrey II. Other returning actors include McGwire Holman and Drew Relling, who made their debut in "Life Could Be A Dream" last summer. Artistic Director Elliott Schwab also appears in the show, as the flower shop owner Mr. Mushnik.

The four-member female cast is all brand-new to the OCT. Meet Brooke Kassal, Anne Marie Garcia, Hannah Guilinger and Izzy Maxwell in next week's edition.
