Summer storm floods roads, golf course

In the overnight and early morning hours of Tuesday, June 14, severe storms saturated New Rockford and much of Eddy County.

Loud claps of thunder and sheets of rain blanketed the area, and at approximately 11 p.m. Monday night, the National Weather Service in Grand Forks issued a tornado warning for southwest Benson County, southwest Ramsey County and northwestern Eddy County after "radar indicated rotation" was picked up near Oberon.

At least one New Rockford resident woke to find more than three inches of water in their rain gauge, while other residents awoke to flooded streets.

The corner of 10th Street South and 1st Avenue North, near Dauenhauer Diesel Repair, was underwater Tuesday morning, as well as the access road to the New Rockford Reservoir and a section of 5th Avenue North, which had to be coned off.

Meanwhile, the New Rockford Golf Course hadn't fared much better. According to their Facebook page, 3.3 inches of rain descended onto the course, and as of Tuesday afternoon much of the course was still heavily saturated, forcing the course to close Tuesday and Wednesday while volunteers used pumps to divert water away from the greens. As of press time, the course was expected to reopen Thursday, but golfers were encouraged to play #8 short and keep carts off the still-wet areas.

Park District Director Dennis Nybo said water had to be pumped out of the city's swimming pool as well, and added that the storm did them no favors as they tried to improve the pool's water quality.

The rain wasn't just dumped on Eddy County, however, as much of eastern North Dakota also saw heavy rainfall and high winds.

A funnel cloud was spotted near Fessenden, and an image was posted to the Herald-Press Facebook page.

The Wells County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday that all roads in Johnson Township, south of Sykeston, were closed due to flooding.

One resident in Mayville reported 1.7 inches of rain in just 45 minutes. Others reported knocked over trees in Dickey and near Wimbledon, while one resident lost three grain bins east of Ellendale.
