4-Hers compete in District Communication Arts contest held at New Rockford

Young people from Wells, Stutsman, Sheridan and Foster counties competed June 1, 2022 in the 4-H District Communication Arts Contest held at the New Rockford -Sheyenne School in New Rockford. Communication Arts is the 4-H speech and demonstration competition that is held at the county, district and state levels. Participants are encouraged to use their own creativity and originality in preparing their public presentation. The Communication Arts program is open to any youth involved in extension youth programs. It includes three age divisions. The Cloverbud division present but do not compete. Cloverbuds are youth finishing or completed Kindergarten through second grade. The Junior division (youth 8-12 years old) and the Senior division (youth ages 13-18) compete to earn the right to represent the district at the State Contest, which is held during the North Dakota State Fair. Winners over the age of 13 are also provided a paid Extension Youth Conference Registration fee.

Participation gifts were given to all participants. Medallions were provided to Champions (Junior and Senior). Rosettes were awarded to Honorable Mentions.

The 4-H Communication Arts program has five primary objectives:

• To help participants develop communication skills that are useful throughout a lifetime.

• To provide participants an opportunity to practice skills before a group.

• To provide participants an opportunity to gather and organize information, equipment and props for public presentation.

• To develop participants' confidence in making public presentations.

• To evaluate and enhance communication skills.

The State 4-H Communication Arts Contest will be held Sunday, July 24, 2022 during the North Dakota State Fair.
