Benz leaps for first at Harvey/Wells County Jr. High Invite

The New Rockford-Sheyenne junior high track team traveled just 23 miles west to Fessenden, to compete in the Harvey/Wells County Junior High Invite on Thursday, April 28.

This track meet brought in over 700 participants from Barnes County North, Benson County, Bottineau, Carrington, Devils Lake, Central McLean, Des Lacs-Burlington, Griggs County Central, Harvey/Wells County, Hazen, Jamestown, Medina-Pingree-Buchanan, Nedrose, New Rockford-Sheyenne, North Star, Northern Lights, Minot, Rolette, Rugby, Southern McLean and Warwick.

Although there were many participants, the Rockets still had many athletes place in the top-10, with one athlete taking home first place in two events. That athlete was eighth grader, Easton Benz.

Benz competed in four events; those being triple jump, long jump, the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. Benz leapt for victory in long jump and triple jump, taking first place in both.

Alongside Benz in the 4x100-meter relay was Thomas Allmaras, Malaki Kukowski and Sawyer Huso. The Rockets' relay team tied for fifth place with Josh Shriver, Toby George, Owen Wilmot and Casey Freeman of Bottineau with a time of 54.80 seconds.

The same scenario happened in the 4x400-meter relay. The Rockets team, made up of Benz, Allmars, Vincent Ruppell and Easton Simon, ran a time of 4:25.63, and tied with John Smith, Zayden Grover, Milo Anderson and Kamron Grotte of Des Lacs-Burlington.

The Rockets also had a boys' 4x200-meter relay team. Ruppell, Kukowski, Huso and Easton Simon ran the 4x200-meter relay in a time of 1:59.90 and took sixth place.

The boys' team placed seventh overall with a total of 33.5 points.

As for the Rockets girls' team, only three events placed in the top-10. Ava Peterson took eighth place in the 200- meter dash with a time of 31.56 seconds. Peterson also competed alongside Paige Knatterud, Alivia Yri and Emmie Belquist in the 4x400-meter relay, and placed 10th overall.

Knatterud, Yri, Karsyn Wetzel and Belquist made up the girls' 4x200-meter relay team and placed seventh with a time of 2:07.96.

The girls' team placed 17th with a total of three points.

Warwick had a total of eight athletes compete at the H/WC Jr. High Invite. Top placers were Robert Richotte placing 21st in shot put, Kayonna Whiteshield, Sofia Tangalin, Audrina Black and Bella Baer placing 23rd in the 4x100-meter relay and Baer placing 27th in the 200- meter hurdles.

The Rockets will travel to Fessenden on Tuesday, May 10 with the varsity tracksters to compete in the CNDC Jr. High and High School track and field meet, with field events starting at 2 p.m. and running events starting at 3:30 p.m. As for the Warriors, they will travel to Carrington on Tuesday, May 10 to compete in the Carrington Sports Boosters Jr. High track meet starting at 3:30 p.m. with field events, with running events to follow at 4 p.m.
