Belquist sets three CNDC Indoor meet records in Minot

On Friday, April 1, the New Rockford-Sheyenne track team competed in the Class B CNDC Indoor Meet at the MSU Dome, where one Rockets' sprinter sent records tumbling in her wake.

NR-S sophomore, Kelsie Belquist, took first place in every event she competed in on April Fools' Day, and it wasn't even close.

In the girls' 55-meter dash, she ran her personal best time of 7.05 seconds, and in the 400-meter and 200-meter events, she set new meet records of 59.27 seconds and 26.19 seconds, respectively.

Belquist also competed in the triple jump, where she jumped 37'3", another personal best and another new meet record.

The 55-meter dash was Belquist's most narrow margin of victory, finishing just 0.19 seconds ahead of Summer Krebsbach of South Prairie-Max. Her other victories, however, were much more comfortable.

Belquist finished more than 1.7 seconds ahead of Krebsbach in the 200-meter dash, and in the 400-meter dash she was nearly five seconds faster than Christalea Wagner of Harvey/Wells County. Belquist also jumped more than 2.5 feet farther than Kylie Simpson of Bottineau in the triple jump.

Through the first few meets this year, Belquist has made clear her intention of continuing the dominance she enjoyed last season, but she wasn't the only Rockets' athlete with a strong showing in Minot.

Reaching a height of 6'0", senior Kaden Jensen took first place in the high jump for the third consecutive meet, and in the long jump he leaped 20'4", just over 1.5 feet behind first place finisher Alex Erickson of Harvey/Wells County, but enough to finish fourth place overall.

Jensen also finished fourth in the 55-meter dash among 92 other runners, and he competed alongside Connor Knatterud, Bradyn Collier and Lucas Yri in the 4x160 relay, where the team finished seventh among 15 other teams.

NR-S finished one place better in the boys' 4x400 relay, and the Rockets' girls relay teams finished 11th and eighth in the 4x160 and 4x400 relays, respectively.

Other Rockets' standouts were Easton Benz, who leaped 18'10" in the long jump for eighth place, and Ava Peterson, who finished the 55-meter dash in 1:12.00 for eighth place.

Meanwhile, other nearby schools were also flying high on the MSU campus, namely Harvey/Wells County.

H/WC finished first and third in the 4x160 and 4x400 relays, respectively, and the Hornets' Madden Thorson, Tate Grossman and Tallen Thorson swept the podium places in the 55-meter hurdles.

The Hornets' Garin Opdahl also placed first in mens' pole vault and triple jump, and Alex Erickson topped the charts in long jump, leaping 21'11.50", nearly a foot further than anyone else at the meet.

Meanwhile, Warwick's Brooklyn Abraham finished 60th out of 92 in the 55-meter dash, and Dalton Joramo finished 26th in the 200-meter event. Cadence Feather stood out in girls' shot put, with a distance of 23'8.50" for 34th place out of 69.

The Warriors' relay team for the girls' 4x160 relay, consisting of Kayona Whiteshield, Jada Clark, Bethany Brown and Belle Bear, finished 16th with a time of 1:52.64. Their boys' 4x160 relay team finished 15th with a time of 1:36:37.

Following their trip to Minot, the NR-S track and field team traveled to Moorhead, Minn. on Tuesday for a meet at Concordia College.
