Rocket tricksters attend Maple River Indoor at Moorhead

On Tuesday, April 5, the New Rockford-Sheyenne track team had intended on competing in the Hazen Early Bird Outdoor Meet, but due to unforeseen weather circumstances, the meet was canceled.

In the nick of time, NR-S tracksters registered for the Maple River Conference Indoor Track & Field Invitational, held in the Olson Forum at Concordia College.

This last minute change of events didn’t seem to bother any of the track athletes, specifically Kelsie Belquist.

Belquist, yet again, blew it out of the park in three-of-four events; which were the 55-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Belquist left all other runners in the dust, to take first place in all three events. The only downfall of competing in this indoor meet, is that if NR-S had attended the Hazen Early Bird, there would’ve been a high chance of Belquist state-qualifying in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash with her times.

Belquist also competed in the 4x200-meter relay race, as the anchor, along with Katie Allmaras, Kaiya O’Connor and Kennedy Demester. The girls’ team took sixth place.

The only other NR-S girls’ runner to place in the top 10 was Ava Peterson. Peterson competed alongside Belquist in the 400-meter dash, and finished in seventh place.

NR-S had multiple boys’ runners finish in the top 10 of multiple events.

Kaden Jensen and Connor Knatterud both competed in the 55-meter dash, taking fifth and 10th places respectively. Knatterud also excelled in the 400-meter dash, taking seventh place, along with Easton Benz, who took fourth place, and Lucas Yri, who placed 10th.

Jensen and Knatterud also competed in the 4x200-meter relay along with Haydon Meier and Easton Benz, and took seventh place overall. Not only did NR-S have one boys’ relay team compete, but two. Yri, Keaton Cudworth, Bradyn Collier and Porter Granger made up the second relay team, and took eighth place, finishing only 2.86 seconds behind the other NR-S team.

Top-10 placer in the boys’ 200-meter dash, was Meier with a time of 26.10 seconds. Meier placed 10th overall.

As for the field side of the meet, Jensen was the only NR-S athlete to place in the top-10. Jensen took fifth place in both the high jump and long jump events.

The NR-S boys’ and girls’ teams both placed seventh overall.

The Rockets will travel just 45 miles north to compete in the Devils Lake Gerrells Outdoor Meet at Joe Foller Field/Myron Loberg Track on Monday, April 11 starting at 4 p.m.. This meet will be covered in the April 18 edition.
