CHS Wrestling crowns three state champions, NR-S senior Duchscherer second

They may not have had the biggest team at the State B Individual Wrestling Tournament, but the ones who showed up for Carrington made quite an impact.

Three Cardinal wrestlers captured state championships, and one other made the finals match in their respective weight classes Thursday and Friday, February 17-18, at the Fargodome.

The tournament marked the end of the legendary careers of seniors Brecken Lura and Michael Clifton with state championships, and another

senior, Matthew Duchscherer, left a legacy to be emulated for any future New Rockford-Sheyenne competitors.

Junior Trace Hoggarth also reached the top of the mountain with a state title at 113 pounds.

Including his dual tournament wins on Saturday, Lura put the finishing touches on what would be a 54-9 season with a 4-2 decision win over

Mike Nelson of Lisbon in the 138-pound finals.

With 240 career victories, he broke 2016 CHS graduate Walker Carr's school record of 236, and became the first wrestler in Cardinal history to place at the state tournament six times.

Clifton, meanwhile, finished one of the most dominant seasons in recent memory by pinning all four of his opponents in the individual

tourney at 182 pounds, including a fall at the 1:39 mark over Lisbon's Silas Reinke for the championship.

This past year, Clifton finished 56-3, with a Class B record for pins with 47, breaking the old mark set by former Cardinal wrestler Tyler Hoggarth with 42.

Speaking of the Hoggarth family, Trace made his presence felt at the tournament with two pins in the first round and quarterfinals, and got dominant decision wins in the last two rounds. His final match was a 7-2 decision against Killdeer's Jace Andersen.

The youngest of the four wrestling Hoggarth brothers, he became the first one to win a state title, and should be among the favorites next year as well. He finished his season with a 46-8 record.

Duchscherer made his second consecutive finals appearance at 126 pounds, but fell to New Salem-Almont's Cole Gerhardt by a 7-3 score. His season ended at 38-14.

Four other Cardinals qualified for the tournament, but none of the quartet reached the placement rounds.

Junior Kael Kovar, sophomore Logan Weninger and senior Jonathan Lura all won one of their three matches at 152, 160 and 170 pounds, while freshman Callen Garber went 0-2 at 195.

Points from seven of the eight CHS wrestlers allowed them to finish in fourth place as a team, with 110 points.

Lisbon (201.5 points) made it six in a row for team titles, but the Broncos had to withstand a spirited challenge from New Salem-Almont (194.5) in the final race. The Cards still had an outside shot for third place, but South Border (119) did just enough in the finals round to hold them off.

Cardinals take dual consolation title

Carrington, in spite of their open weights, made it a productive Saturday afternoon at the State B Dual Wrestling Tournament.

The Cards bounced back from a first-round 46-18 loss to New Salem-Almont, and took the next two matches to claim the consolation championship February 19.

On the way, the Cards avenged two losses to the Central Cass Squirrels in the regular season and Region 2 Tournament, 38-33, and got a match-clinching pin to earn a tight 40-36 win over the Honkers of Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central for fifth.

The final win over K-B-BC was notched by senior Brecken Lura in the 145-pound match in just 22 seconds. He ended his prep career as the all-time winningest Cardinal wrestler with 240 victories.

The first round against the second-seeded Holsteins featured just four wins for CHS, with two of those coming in the first pair of matches from Corbin Clifton and Lura. Trace Hoggarth also added a pin at 113 pounds.

Michael Clifton finished up his sparkling high school tenure with his

Class B-record 47th pin in the NS-A match, but did not have a chance to add to that mark with forfeit wins in the next two duals.

Dual action opposite the Squirrels in the afternoon session was truly a punch/counterpunch affair.

An opening pin by Central Cass was followed by a fall from Kael Kovar (152) and a Logan Weninger major decision, and Jonathan Lura had another pin at 170 that would loom large in the final score.

A decision, pin and forfeit in the upper weights gave Cass 15 points to put the score at 22-21 in favor of the Cards wrapping around back to 106, and Dru Carr got a nice 8-5 win followed by a major decision from Hoggarth.

The Squirrels would get one more pin and forfeit, but Matthew Duchscherer (126) and Brecken Lura cinched up the mild upset with a pin and 9-4 victory in the finale.

For the consolation dual, it again went to Kovar, Weninger and Jonathan Lura to give CHS an early start of 10-0. From 220 to 106, the Honkers made their comeback with three straight pins, but the Cards answered right back to negate that surge with a trio of their own from Hoggarth, Nic Garber (120) and Duchscherer. The Cards dropped forfeits at 132 and 138 to trail, 36-34, and set up the stage for Brecken Lura in the final bout.

Carrington finished their season with an 8-10 record in duals.

Lisbon won their third consecutive Class B crown in the tournament, edging the Holsteins, 36-30. South Border took third with a 37-25 win over Hettinger/Scranton/Bison (S.D.)
