Cardinal wrestlers advance to state duals

The biggest battle coming into the Region 2 Dual Tournament for the Carrington Cardinals was the numbers game.

With a 4-8 record in all duals coming into the state-qualifying tournament at May-Port-CG High School Saturday, February 5, the Cards had the wrestlers to make a run if all went their way.

If they could only get past their weakness of open weight classes.

Seeded fourth, CHS wrestlers picked each other up from match to match, and advanced to the finals with first-round wins over Hillsboro-Central Valley, 67-12, and a 42-27 shocker against top overall seed Pembina County North.

The uncontested weights finally caught up to them in the championship, where the Central Cass Squirrels made use of 18 free points to take a 42-36 win.

Heroes for the Cards on the day included great performances by Dru Carr with a trio of pinfalls at 106 and 113 pounds, and Logan Weninger also went 3-0 with a pin and two decision victories at 160.

Also winning three were Trace Hoggarth (pin, major decision and decision), Matthew Duchscherer and Brecken Lura (two wins and a forfeit,) Kael Kovar, and Michael Clifton with three pins.

Two wins came from Jonathan Lura, and Callen Garber received a forfeit and a decision win in the PCN match.

State Dual Tourney

This year at the Fargodome Thursday-Saturday, February 17-19, there will be a format change for the dual tournament as it relates to the individual event.

In past years, the dual and individual rounds would rotate within the first two days of the combined tourney, but now the events are completely separate.

The dual portion of the tournament has been moved to Saturday, after the individual bracket matches Friday night. First round duals will start at 10 a.m., followed by the semifinal/consolation round at 12:30 p.m. and championship/third place/fifth place at 3 p.m.

As of press time, seedings and matchups were yet to be determined.
