Belquist leads Rockets to District 7 win over Lady Warriors

On Friday Jan. 28, the Rockets hosted yet another District 7 competitor: the Warwick Lady Warriors. The Rockets defeated the Lady Warriors 64-27, giving the Rockets their first District 7 win of the season, after tough losses to Nelson County, Benson County, Harvey/Wells County and Four Winds/Minnewaukan.

Senior Kennedy Demester started off the first quarter very well. When given the perfect opportunity, Demester lined up not one, but two shots from the 3-point line, draining both. Although these two 3-pointers didn't make Demester the top scorer for the Rockets, she did become the second top scorer for the Rockets.

New Rockford-Sheyenne sophomore Kelsie Belquist matched her all-time high of 28 points, again. Yes, you read that right. Previously this season, Belquist hit 28 points against the Rolette/Wolford Comets on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Transcript readers may remember Belquist as the 'Freshman Phenom' after attending the 2021 NDHSAA State B Track and Field meet in Bismarck last May.

Belquist didn't start scoring heavily until the third and fourth quarters. In the first half of the game, she only scored a total of eight points. With that being said, Belquist scored 20 points in the second half of the game.

Belquist had many opportunities to steal the ball and take off like a rocket. Ha, get it? Belquist would steal the ball and breakaway to the basket to make a layup, many times against the Lady Warriors. Belquist put in a total of seven field goals in the second half, along with two 3-pointers.

Steals were the new normal for this game. Most, if not all, Rockets players had at least one steal under their belt.

Lead scorers for the Lady Warriors were Hillary Archambault with eight and Abigail Cavanaugh with six total points.

The Rockets junior varsity also blew it out of the park with a 60-11 win over the Lady Warriors. Sophomore Trysta Thumb led the Rockets with 12 total points. Kaiya O'Connor also scored in double digits with 11 points.

Warwick junior Jada Clark was the top scorer for the junior varsity Lady Warriors with six points.

The Rockets junior varsity team held off the Lady Warriors from scoring until the third quarter, where they were able to score their 11 points.
