Duchscherer one of three champs at Lisbon meet

The Carrington wrestlers took three weight class championships, had another advance to the finals, and had three additional placers at the Nick Storhaug Invitational in Lisbon Saturday, Jan. 22.

Winners for the Cardinals were Matthew Duchscherer at 126 pounds, Brecken Lura at 138 and Michael Clifton at 182. Duchscherer, the New Rockford-Sheyenne senior, went the point-scoring route to secure the tournament victory by garnering three major-decision victories after an opening-round pin.

The Cards' defending state champions, Lura and Clifton, had four and three wins in their brackets. Lura had two pins, a major and a 7-4 win over Lisbon's Mike Nelson in the finals, while Clifton steamrolled through his weight class with a triplicate of pins.

In the 113-pound class, Trace Hoggarth nearly became the fourth champion on the weekend, but lost a tough 8-7 decision to Cole Sykora of Border West (Clinton, Minn.) in the finals. He also earned three pinfalls at the Storhaug.

Other placers for the Cards were Corbin Clifton, fifth place at 145, Callen Garber, sixth at 195, and Jonathan Lura, seventh at 170. Gabe Clifton (106) and Logan Weninger (152) both had two victories, but just missed out on placing.

The Cards scored 141 points to take sixth place. Host Lisbon won the tournament, as the Broncos had 234.5 points to outdistance second place South Border (201.5). Valley City, Twin Cities suburban school Lakeville North and Bismarck St. Mary's rounded out the top five.

Carrington's regular season is suddenly nearing its conclusion. CHS hosted a triangular dual this past Thursday against "A" programs Devils Lake and West Fargo, and traveled to the final tournament before the start of the postseason, the East-West in New Salem, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29.
