Duchscherer wins two in dual losses to HWC, Central Cass

Being down in numbers to fill lineup slots, everything had to go Carrington’s way in contested weights to salvage any form of victory in a triangular dual meet with HWC and Central Cass on Thursday, Jan. 6, in Harvey.

Even with four forfeits to the Hornets and five to the Squirrels, the Cards lost both duals by a combined tally of just five points, taking a bitter 37-36 loss to the home team and tasting defeat in 40-36 fashion to the eastern North Dakota school.

Taking wins in both duals were Trace Hoggarth (113 and 120 pounds), Matthew Duchscherer (132 and 138), Brecken Lura (145), Kael Kovar (152), Logan Weninger (160) and Michael Clifton (182).

The hill to climb for the Cards was a big one, especially against HWC. Carrington only won one of the first eight matches, a pin for Hoggarth at 120, to put themselves in a 34-6 hole.

However, they made a match of it in the end, with three straight pins and a forfeit, before the swing match of the dual at 170 went to HWC’s Nick Dossenko in the sudden victory period, 7-5, over Jonathan Lura to clinch the first win for the Hornets over the Cards in quite some time.

The Squirrel dual had more of a back-and-forth feel, but the Cards outwrestled Cass in the head-to-head portion and couldn’t overcome the free points.

This time around, the dual came down to the final match with both schools tied at 36 all, and the Squirrels’ Stone Thorton took an 8-0 shutout by major decision.
