Seven matches in the space of two days is a tall task for any individual wrestler.
That’s what awaited much of the 17-team field at the Velva Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4.
However, the Carrington Cardinals powered through that early conditioning test, winning four weight classes and advancing to two other championship matches to score 373 points for the team title.
Minot Bishop Ryan, with 326 points, came in second and Northern Lights (Rolla/Rolette/St. John) scored 283 for third.
Champions for the Cards were Trace Hoggarth at 120 pounds, Brecken Lura at 145, Kael Kovar at 152, and Michael Clifton at 182. CHS could have had six champions, but Matthew Duchscherer (132) and Corbin Clifton (138) were both saddled with hard-luck losses in the sudden victory period in their title matches.
Two other Cards placed third with impressive 5-1 records, those being Dru Carr at 113 pounds and Logan Weninger at 160. Finishing in fifth, and also winning five matches for the weekend, were 170-pounder Jonathan Lura and Callen Garber at 195.
Friday’s matches were round-robin format within various pools, and the results attained there carried over to the bracket tournament on Saturday.
Full results for Duchscherer, a senior at NR-S, from the Velva Invitational are as follows:
