Foundation meets Feud

In its first fundraising event since 2018, the New Rockford Community Foundation did not disappoint.

The $50-a-plate night was worth the wait, with a spread of prime rib and garlic mashed potatoes or jumbo shrimp and pasta, with a salad bar and dessert. There were 144 people served.

The main event, The Feud, had the room erupting in laughter as 12 teams of five people competed two at a time in a points race. Each team was randomly drawn for their opponents. With five rounds in each match-up, all players got to take a turn at the buzzer.

Dustin Miller of Encore Events in Minot kept the players, and the crowd, engaged with his off-the-wall jokes and random questions.

The top two teams with the most points, the Eagles Club, and G & R Grain and Feed, played the Speed Round. Other teams who prevailed in their competition rounds were the Allmaras family, Guler family and Hager Excavating.

In their matching G & R Grain and Feed hoodies, members of the Homelvig family–Melanie, Ross, Dylan, Katelyn and Ryan– prevailed in The Feud.

The Homelvigs' strategy was sound, passing the play to their opponents at a key juncture, so they had a chance to steal when the others ran out of answers.

Brothers Ryan and Ross took the stage for the Fast Money round. Ryan led the way, giving two #1 answers. Ross followed with two #1 answers of his own, and the pair squeaked out the win with 202 points. They brought home $1,000 cash for their efforts.

Below are the five questions asked in the Fast Money round. Write down the first answer that comes to your mind. At the end of this article, we'll post the #1 answers so you can see how you would have fared in the "hot seat."

1. Name something that slides down a pole.

2. How many bites does it take to eat a six-inch hot dog?

3. Name a word that rhymes with bummer.

4. Name something that is no fun, but more of us have no choice but to do it anyway.

5. Besides your house, name a place where you might take off your clothes.

More fun followed The Feud, with teams competing in Name That Tune. The Allmaras family team took home the victory and bragging rights in that competition.

The New Rockford Community Foundation president Josh Guler said that more than $11,500 was raised from the event, which will go directly into the endowment fund. With that addition, the balance of the fund has now exceeded $160,000.

Consider the New Rockford Community Foundation in your end-of-year giving plans. All donations are fully tax deductible. Further, the state offers donors an income tax credit on 40 percent of donations made to the fund, up to $10,000 for individuals or $20,000 for married couples. The credit effectively reduces or eliminates income tax liability, and any unused credit can be carried over for up to three taxable years after the donation is made.
