LA/E/M Cardinals fly past Rockets in Region 4 contest

The Langdon area/Edmore/Munich Cardinals hosted the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets at the Edmore High School gymnasium on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

With the Cardinals being ranked #2 in the region, the Rockets knew they would have to fight to bring home this win. Unfortunately, the Rockets had very little "rocket speed" to keep up with the Cardinals.

The first set started off rocky for the Rockets, with many errors made. Not only were errors made by the Rockets, but also by the Cardinals. The Rockets lost to the Cardinals by only eight points. One would think that after that close of a first match, the second and third would be the same. Unfortunately, not in the Rockets case.

The Rockets lost the second set 7-25. From passing errors to hitting errors to blocking errors, there were too many to count. The Cardinals were simply on top of their A-game, and the Rockets were not.

The third set was better than the second. The Rockets put up 14 points, to lose only by 11 points. The Rockets are still ranked third in the region, behind LA/E/M who is ranked second and North Star, who is ranked first.

When watching these region match-ups between the top three seeds of the region, you can learn what needs to be adjusted. For example, North Star and Langdon area/Edmore/Munich have great coverage. If the middle hitter is hitting, the other five players on the court are covering. To beat the Bearcats or the Cardinals at regionals, the Rockets need to have great coverage.

Kelsie Belquist was the lead hitter for the Rockets with 12 kills. Belquist was the only Rocket player to break double digits. Junior Madisen Myhre had a total of four kills, Mya Cudworth had a total of two and Macey Wobbema, Ava Peterson and Kaiya O'Connor each had one kill.

Kennedy Demester led in digs with a total of 12 digs, with Belquist behind with seven. Other Rocket players with digs were Cudworth with four, Delana Thomas with three, and Kyria Dockter and O'Connor with two each.

Myhre held the lone point for blocks for the Rockets.

The Rockets had a total of 20 assists, for once not only by O'Connor. Along with O'Connor's 15, Peterson and Demester each had two and Cudworth had one.

The Rockets b-squad and c-squad teams weren't successful either. The B-squad team lost 14-25, 22-25, and 11-25. The c-squad team lost in two, 10-25 and 12-25.

The junior high team had a different outcome than the rest. The Rockets lost the first set 19-25, but came back to win the second set 25-6 and the third set 15-8.

On Monday, Oct. 25 the Rockets will host the Griggs-Midkota Titans (A,B,C,8,7) starting at 3:30 p.m. with parents/senior night before the start of the varsity game.

The Rockets will travel to Rolla (A,B,C) on Thursday, Oct. 28 to take on the Bulldogs in their home gym starting at 5 p.m.
