Corn harvest hits halfway point

North Dakota Corn Growers Association (NDCGA) treasurer Drew Courtney reported Wednesday that approximately half of the corn in south central North Dakota had been harvested. In the photo above, Kerstin Allmaras and son Thomas made progress on a cornfield near their family farmstead west of New Rockford on Sunday, Oct. 17. USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service reports indicate that 97 percent of the area's corn has matured. According to the NDCGA, North Dakota is expected to produce about 413 million bushels of corn this year on 3.82 million acres with a 108 bushel per acre average yield across the state. Over half of the state's corn is used for ethanol.
