Sermonette: July 19, 2021

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.” Psalms 62:5-8 NIV

“Be still.” That is what the Lord has been telling me the last few days. The last week and a half has been a whirlwind. I’ve been traveling and going constantly, I’ve barely had a moment to sit down. I was driving back home, and I was chatting with the Lord asking Him why I felt so weird, and I realized I hadn’t spent proper time with Him, just sitting, in a while. I’d been so caught up in my to-do list or where I was going, I hadn’t realized how desperate my soul was to spend time with my Heavenly Father. I felt restless, impatient, and tired.

I don’t think I’m alone in this. We rush through life and fill every moment of the day. When we finally sit down, our brains feel like they can’t handle anything else so we look for rest in movies, TV, YouTube, unhealthy relationships, etc. We search for rest in everything else other than God. The Bible tells us God promises rest to those who are weary and tired, but in order to find rest, we must humble ourselves and admit we don’t have the answer to true rest, only God does.

Psalm 46:10 says “Be still and know that I am God…” This verse gives us instruction in the first step in finding God—be still. I encourage you to carve time out of your day and week to be still and find God. Give Him a chance to speak to you and show you what true rest looks like. Don’t make it complicated, just quiet yourself and see what happens. For me, the three instructions I felt the Lord tell me was: Wake up, Make coffee, and Just sit with Him. You can take or leave these, but whatever your method looks like, just be still.
