Grann, Johnson compete in ND Shrine Bowl

New Rockford-Sheyenne locals, Johnny Grann and Hunter Johnson, were two of the many outstanding senior athletes to be a part of the 2021 North Dakota Shrine Bowl.

The 11-man game started at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 19 at West Fargo High School, with the 9-man match-up following at 7 p.m.

Grann and Johnson both played on the East Region 9-man team. The East team defeated the West team 30-24. Grann threw two touchdown passes in the win.

During the East and West 11-man match up, Lakota native and Shrine bowl referee Kevin Baumgarn collapsed to the ground. Baumgarn went into cardiac arrest. Elgin graduate Jon Bogert, who played in the 9-man contest, started an AED to revive Baumgarn while nurses conducted CPR. Baumgarn is recovering at Sanford Health.

The profits from the North Dakota Shrine Bowl are split between the Shrine Hospital in the Twin Cities, and a transportation fund to transport patients and families to and from the hospital.

Grann and Johnson have both signed with the University of Jamestown to play football.
