Collegiate Congratulations: Boote earns Sonny Sikes Pioneer Award at CNFR

Jade Boote is a senior at Dickinson State University. She is currently in her fourth year and studying secondary business education. Jade has been serving as the Great Plains Student Director of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) for the region, which consists of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska. In total, there are 11 regions that make up the NIRA, with each having a student director and a faculty director.

When asked what the Great Plains Student Director does, Jade stated, "I work hand-in-hand with the coaches and secretary, attending meetings, hanging banners and organizing flags at all the rodeos. In simpler words, I am the student representative, whom the contestants can come to with issues, and I will take it to the coaches if needed." Jade also assists in finding sponsorships for the region to help pay for saddles, buckles and many other things.

Recently, she competed in the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyo. along with five other Dickinson State University rodeo competitors. Jade competed in the breakaway roping event with her horse Reggie. In round one, she received a time of 2.8 seconds and placed eighth in the round. Round two wasn't the best. With a broken barrier, she had a time of 12.4 seconds. In round three, she broke the barrier as well, and received a time of 12.0 seconds, receiving 12th place to move on to the short go. With an unsuccessful run in the short go, Jade finished 12th in the nation.

Along with competing in the CNFR, Jade attended meetings, interviews and events as a part of her position as the Great Plains Student Director. She also served as an event director in steer wrestling. While at the CNFR, Jade was notified that she was awarded the Sonny Sikes "Pioneer Award." This award comes with a scholarship worth $2,000.

Jade isn't the only successful one of the Boote family. Her brother, Jory, also attends Dickinson State University. Jory recently competed in the Lake Region Stampede in Devils Lake on June 11-12. Jory received second place in the calf roping event with a time of 11.8 seconds.

Jade and Jory are two of the three children of Alan and Nikki Boote of Binford, N.D.
