Dakota Recreation Report: May 24, 2021

Outdoor notes:

*Check local fire restrictions for campfires when camping.

*Deer gun and muzzleloader applications now available. Go to the N.D. Game and Fish Department website, (gf.nd.gov) to apply.

*June 2: Deer gun and muzzleloader applications due.

*June 5 & 6: Free fishing weekend.

Tournaments:

*June 5: Devils Lake, East Bay; Missouri River tailrace.

Fishing:

*Devils Lake elevation, May 18: 1,448.21 feet above mean sea level (MSL).

*Stump Lake elevation: 1,448.2 MSL.

*Lake Sakakawea elevation: 1,834.59 MSL; 22,400 cubic feet per second average (CFS) Garrison Dam daily releases.

*N.D. Game and Fish Dept. Dist. game wardens: No reports from east-central area lakes. Improving walleye activity on Devils Lake. Van Hook Arm remains slow on the midsection of Lake Sakakawea with better success around White Earth Bay and New Town. No reports from the east end of the lake.

*Devils Lake, Ed’s Bait Shop, Devils Lake: Improving walleye success, but continue working shallow water. Try pitching crankbaits. Work the shorelines for white bass.

*Devils Lake, Lakeview Lodge, Minnewaukan: Improving walleye, pike, and white bass activity. Work shallow, warm water for all species, with better white bass success on the east side of the lake. Try 6-Mile Bay for pike.

*Devils Lake, Woodland Resort, Devils Lake: Walleye activity slowly improving, but warmer water temperatures needed for better bite to turn around.

*Foster County area lakes, Dry Dock, Carrington: Look for improving walleye success with warming water temperatures throughout area lakes.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Some activity scattered throughout area lakes with occasional limits of walleye. Try jigs and minnows for walleye.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Increasing activity throughout area lakes using jigs and minnows for walleye.

*Lake Ashtabula, Ashtabula Crossing, Luverne: Fair walleye success in the evening. Try bottom bouncers in the shallows in four to eight feet around the mouth of the creek or the breaks on windy days. Also try around Sibley Crossing. Some nice-sized pike still showing up along with a few muskie. Release any muskie less than 48 inches. Some smallmouth bass mixed in with the walleye with generally improving panfish success.

*Lake Ashtabula, Bayshore, Valley City: OK panfish success with a few walleye. Docks in place throughout the lake. Lake levels at about normal levels.

*Lake Sakakawea, Cenex Bait & Tackle, Garrison: Lake Sakakawea remains spotty on the east end, with some improving walleye success. Work points and the mouths of bays in 9 - 23 feet with live bait rigs and minnows. Also try jigging aggressively with minnows. East end of Lake Audubon also producing walleye with the same presentations.

*Lake Sakakawea, Indian Hills Resort, Garrison: Generally slow for walleye, although water temperatures are warming slowly. Store opens May 28, although camping is currently available.

*Lake Sakakawea/Lake Audubon/Missouri River, Scott’s Bait and Tackle, Pick City: Spotty but improving walleye success in 10 feet using a variety of presentations on the east end of Lake Sakakawea. Lake Audubon also producing walleye, although somewhat inconsistent. Good smallmouth bass on both Audubon and Sakakawea. Missouri River tailrace remains slow.

*Lonetree WMA area lakes, Harvey: More activity on area lakes, but success remains slow.

*Pipestem Reservoir, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Increasing activity, but no new reports.

*Spiritwood Lake, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: No reports.

N.D. rivers, river stage and streamflow:

*James River, Kensal: River stage, 1.02 feet; streamflow, 1.64 CFS.

*Pembina River, Walhalla: River stage, 1.32 feet; streamflow, 23 CFS.

*Red River, Grand Forks: River stage, 16.51 feet; streamflow, 2,350 CFS.

*Sheyenne River, Warwick: River stage, 3.04 feet; streamflow, 46.2 CFS
