SNR splits series with Kidder County

Sheyenne-New Rockford played in windy conditions at Steele on Friday, April 30, losing 4-2 to regional opponent Kidder County/Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter.

Alex Harrison pitched for the Black Sox and was uncharacteristically wild. He had six wild pitches in the game, which contributed to all four of the Wolves runs. The Wolves scored in the first inning when Grant Pfaff singled to center field. Blake Pfaff followed that up with a walk. Grant Pfaff then scored on two consecutive wild pitches. Blake Pfaff scored on a single by Jace Larson. Grant Pfaff scored Kidder County's third run, in the third inning, after doubling and advancing on two more wild pitches. The final run was scored in the sixth inning by Larson after he reached base on an error. He advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Simon Hager drove him in on a ground out.

Blake Braun pitched for Kidder County and was unhittable in the early innings. He retired the first 12 batters. SNR did not get their first base runner on until the fifth inning, when Harrison singled on a hard ground ball between first and second. Koby Duda followed that up with a double. Harrison scored on a wild pitch. Courtesy runner Trevor Waldo scored on a single by Evan Ulrich. The Black Sox then loaded the bases with no outs, but the threat was snuffed out when pinch runner Haydon Meier was thrown out at the plate and Kaden Jensen and Caden Price struck out. SNR was not able to score for the rest of the game.

On Monday, May 3, the two teams met for the rematch in New Rockford. SNR came away with the win, 11-7.

SNR started the scoring early in the first inning off of Kidder County starting pitcher Jace Larson. Big second and fourth innings helped seal the victory for the home team. Caden Price and Nick Berglund were the hitting stars for the Sox. Price had two doubles and four RBIs. Berglund hit one double and two singles with four RBIs. Every batter contributed with either a hit or walk.

Nick Berglund started for the Black Sox and pitched well, only allowing two runs in six innings of work. Berglund had to be removed at the beginning of the seventh inning due to pitch count limits. Johnny Grann came in to finish the game.

There were some nervous moments in the final inning after SNR allowed five runs to score on a hit by pitch, two walks, two singles, and two errors, but Grann was able to retire the final batter on a strikeout to end the game.
