Black Sox lose to South Border, defeat PR/F-L at Jamboree

The threat of inclement weather largely thwarted baseball teams' plans to attend the Carrington/SNR Jamboree April 23 and 24, but the Black Sox managed to split their two Saturday afternoon games.

The first game was their planned home half of the Region 3 home-and-home series with South Border, and the Mustangs sprang a 5-4 upset over the 'Sox to drop SNR's league record to 0-4.

In game two, the boys of the dark hose salvaged the weekend with an 8-4 win against the Park River/Fordville-Lankin Aggies.

A pitcher's duel between Black Sox ace Alex Harrison and South Border's Marshall Lindgren was worth the price of admission. The two would pitch all seven innings for their teams, and combine for 23 strikeouts, 13 of those by Harrison.

The Black Sox drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Koby Duda, who reached on a double, scored on Lucas Yri's RBI single. The Caden and Kaden combo (Price and Jensen) would score two more runs in the fifth to give SNR a 3-0 lead.

South Border erased all of that cushion in the sixth. Three straight singles by Lindgren, James Schumacher and Nathan Schauer all came around to score, the last of those on a Daniel Schumacher double.

The 'Sox would take the lead back in the bottom half of the sixth via Koven Walford's RBI double, but Lindgren struck again in the seventh with his third hit of the game, a run-scoring single, and James Schumacher's groundout gave South Border the lead for good.

Schauer would have two hits for the Mustangs, as did Harrison in the losing effort for the 'Sox.

A disappointing loss in the first contest meant that SNR had several hours to regroup and get something positive out of the weekend.

The Aggies, a program with recent state "B" tournament success as the three-peat winners from 2017 to 2019 before COVID-19 shuttered last season, came to New Rockford with a 3-3 season record.

SNR took a 3-0 lead, which held until the top of the fifth inning, when PR/F-L got their first run of the game off eventual winner Nick Berglund, of the unearned variety.

The Black Sox would add two runs in the bottom of the frame, and answered a two-run sixth from the Aggies with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning. Evan Ulrich got the final three outs in relief of Johnny Grann, who threw the middle innings.

Grann had two hits, among those a double, and Price also helped carry the Black Sox bats with a pair of singles. Connor Knatterud was a force on the bases with three runs and a stolen base, and other runs batted in came off the bats of Ulrich, Berglund and Duda.

Jackson Nelson's two hits led PR/F-L, and starter Brady Omdahl had a hit and an RBI in defeat, as did Emmett Miller. Kaleb Hodny scored twice.

This past Tuesday, the 'Sox played their second regional series of the year with Midkota/DP/Lakota/GCC, this time in New Rockford, and traveled to Steele this past Friday to take on Kidder County/Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter in another conference clash.

Today (May 3), SNR is slated to host the KC/N-G-S Wolves at Jim Johnson Park starting at 4 p.m. That will be followed by a Thursday trip to LaMoure/L-M in Region 3 play (5 p.m.), and on Friday, the 'Sox entertain F-S-H-P (4 p.m.)

On Saturday, the team is scheduled to participate in a jamboree in Rugby. Game times are to be determined.
