North Star Bearcats defeat Rockets

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets took on the Bearcats in Cando on Friday, Feb. 19. The Rockets lost 72-47. This was the last region game for the Rockets as they started District play on Friday, Feb. 26.

The Rockets started off the game with three field goals from Nick Berglund and three field goals from Evan Ulrich. Berglund was fouled on and sent to the line to put in one of three free throws. For North Star, Parker Simon put up two field goals and was fouled on and was sent to the line to put in two free throws. Dane Hagler brought in a three-pointer and a field goal. The Bearcats were ahead 15-13 after the first quarter.

The Bearcats came back stronger in the second quarter. Senior Tommy Nikolaisen put up five three-pointers. He was fouled on and was sent to the line to make a bonus free throw. Hagler came back in the second quarter with two more field goals. He was also sent to the line for a shot at a free throw. Johnny Grann put up a three-pointer and a field goal for the Rockets. Berglund and Ulrich also each brought in a field goal. But it simply was not enough. The Bearcats were now ahead 45-23.

Ulrich was fouled on multiple times in the third quarter. He was sent to the line five times to bring in seven free throws. Grann was also fouled on twice and sent to the line to put in three free throws. Junior Kaden Jensen received a technical foul during the third quarter. For the Bearcats, Nikolaisen and Hagler each brought in a three-pointer. Simon put up two field goals along with sophomore Bryce Prouty. The Bearcats kept at 64-35 lead on the Rockets.

In the fourth quarter, Grann and Stephan Merrick each put up a three-pointer. Ulrich brought in two field goals and Berglund brought in one field goal. The Bearcats decided to put their non-starters in during the fourth quarter. Hayden Hagler and Tyler Lloyd both put up one field goal. Simon and Nikolaisen were both sent to the line to put in one free throw each.

Ulrich led the Rockets with 19 total points. Berglund and Grann were also in double digits with 11 points each. On the other side of the stat book, Nikolaisen held the most points for the Bearcats with 26 total points. Also in double digits were D. Hagler with 16 points and Simon with 15 points.

The Rockets junior varsity team defeated the Bearcats 46-49. Top scorers for the Rockets were Haydon Meier with 17 points and DJ Mudgett with 15 points. For the Bearcats, Garrett Westlind held the most points with ten. Karsen Simon held the second most points with seven.
