Rockets get win over Knights, fall to #2 Indians in district play

New Rockford-Sheyenne split a pair of District 7 games in this last week's action, finishing with a 64-34 win at the NRS-S Gym against Dakota Prairie and coming up on the losing end of a 73-53 score against second-ranked Four Winds-Minnewaukan in Fort Totten on January 15 and 18.

The victory against the Knights came after a lackluster first half of basketball for the Rockets in which the teams were deadlocked at 22 all. That all changed in the third quarter, when NR-S blew the game wide open with a 24-3 spurt.

Evan Ulrich's 24 points paced NR-S in the triumph. Johnny Grann had 14 points as well, which included three shots from behind the three-point line.

Dakota Prairie (4-4 overall, 1-1 District 7) was led in scoring by 12 points from Cade Stein.

Three nights later, the always-daunting Four Winds Community School Gym was the venue for the Rockets and Indians' latest battle on the hardwood.

For three quarters, NR-S contained the Indians just enough to stay within striking distance, coming within eight at the buzzer at 54-46, but FW-M put all designs of an upset on ice by holding the Rockets to just seven points in the final period.

Grann, with 20 points, along with Nick Berglund and his 15 tallies, did their part to keep the Rockets afloat by connecting from downtown on four occasions apiece. Ulrich also added 14 in the loss.

Seven players scored in a very-balanced effort for Four Winds-Minnewaukan, who improved to 7-1 on the campaign and 2-0 in district contests. The Indians also displayed some long-range artistry with seven threes of their own.

Jayden Yankton and Caelen Lohnes had 16 and 12 points for the Indians, while 6'10" center Bronson Walter roamed the interior for an 11-point evening.

Next up for NR-S (6-4, 2-1 District 7) are district matchups with HWC on Tuesday in Harvey and Lakota at home Friday night, and the Rockets take on another Class B poll occupant in fourth-ranked Langdon/Edmore/Munich Saturday afternoon on the road, as part of a girls'/boys' twinbill.
