Winterfest 2020: Make gingerbread houses with Pop Tarts!

This is a year to put a twist on tradition. If you don't really get into baking gingerbread, consider using Pop Tart toaster pastries to build a holiday house!

What you need:

Pop-Tarts- frosted strawberry or confetti cupcake work well for the roof, because the white icing looks like snow. For the walls, use brown sugar and cinnamon to make them look like gingerbread.

Tin foil covered board or plate

Candy décor of your choosing:

Mini candy canes and other colorful, hard candies

Christmas sixlets

Gum drops

Sour Patch Kids make great people!

Licorice rope

Yogurt covered pretzels

First, make the icing:

1 lb confectioner's sugar

2 egg whites

¼ teaspoon lemon juice

Place ingredients in the bowl of a mixer and beat on medium high until thick and stiff peaks form, scrape down sides when necessary. Place into piping bag fitted with a small round tip or place in a plastic bag, seal closed and cut a very small piece off the corner.

You can also make a second batch and use food dye to make red and green icing you can decorate the house with after it is assembled.

Directions:

Trim the top corners off two pop tarts to form the front and back walls. Lay out the pop tarts as shown in the diagram above. Pipe icing around the edges of the two trimmed pop tarts and two more whole pop tarts. Then stand up the "walls" and press together to seal. Pipe two more pop tarts with icing and put on top to form the roof. Decorate as desired using icing, candies, licorice ropes, cereal or any other edible items.

The finished house shown below was made with ingredients purchased at Dollar General in New Rockford. Miller's Fresh Foods also has everything you need, so a quick trip to the local store is all you need to get to work on this fun hoiday project.
