Smith Warren to lead Wonder Lanes renovation project

New Rockford’s iconic bowling alley will remain closed throughout the winter as the New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation (NRABC) develops a plan for its ongoing operation.

At their Nov. 11 meeting, the NRABC board agreed to a contract with Sarah Smith Warren of Soul Space Work. She will take on the role of project manager, guiding the economic development group through research, fundraising, renovations, marketing and eventually the sale and/or reopening of the former Wonder Lanes.

Smith Warren will develop a budget and renovation plan for the bowling alley, identify sources of funds for the project and build potential business models. At this point a variety of options are on the table, including resale to an individual or entity interested in owning and operating the business, leasing the space to an operator, or having NRABC continue to own and operate the business.

NRABC Executive Director Amanda Hegland said that during the 2018 strategic planning process, family entertainment was a priority. “Having things for kids and families to do” was a desire often noted by community members at that time, according to Hegland.

The goal of NRABC is to support entrepreneurs, assist in the creation of and continuation of existing business. Smith Warren referenced the Krueger’s half-century of operation in the community. “With this proposal, NRABC and Soul Space Work are committing to continuing that legacy,” she said.

NRABC President Stuart Richter said the ultimate goal would be to have it operated as a private business.

Anyone who is interested in being a part of the process is welcome and encouraged to contact the NRABC at (701) 947-2205.

Residents should watch for a community survey to be released in the coming weeks. The idea is to seek public input on how to best use the space.
