Obituary: Edith Gehrtz

Edith Rose Gehrtz, age 92, of New Rockford, N.D., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020, at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, N.D.

A private rosary, prayer service and Mass of Christian Burial were held Friday, November 6 at St. John’s Catholic Church, New Rockford with Fr. Reece Weber officiating. Special music was provided by Heather Klocke.

Burial took place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, New Rockford. Casket bearers were PJ Hughes, Clint Risovi, Joshua Gedrose, Monte Gehrtz, Michael Gehrtz, Jeffrey Gehrtz and Matthew Gehrtz. Honorary bearers were all of Edith’s grandchildren.

Edith was born on September 20, 1928, at Veseleyville, N.D., the daughter of John and Josephine Cicha. She attended school in Conway N.D. Edith married Dean Gehrtz in Larimore, N.D. on August 30, 1949. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in New Rockford, N.D.

Over the years Edith was a dedicated and hard worker at the various jobs she worked at in New Rockford. In 1983 Dean and Edith purchased the Silvercrest Bakery in New Rockford. They worked side by side up until their retirement in 1995.

Her most important jobs and the ones she was most proud of were being a devoted wife and an extraordinary mother and grandmother. You could find her in the kitchen, her happy place, baking her famous homemade buns, bread, caramel rolls and baked goodies.

Edith is survived by her eight children David (Patti) Gehrtz, New Rockford, N.D.; Dennis (Mary) Gehrtz, New Rockford, N.D.; Vickie (Mike) Bartholome, Devils Lake, N.D.; Carol (Mike) Risovi, New Rockford, N.D.; Steven (Elaine) Gehrtz, Fargo, N.D.; Shirley (Pat) Hughes, Covington, Ohio; Donna (Bruce) Gedrose, New Rockford, N.D., and Curtis (Barb) Gehrtz, Fargo, N.D.; 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Dean, parents John and Josephine Cicha, brothers Charles and George Cicha and sisters Florence Infeld and Alice Hippe.
