Archival Anecdotes: Comforts of Home

Comforts of Home

The mid- to late-1800s was a booming time for North Dakota, as settlers arrived from nearby states such as Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. Toward the turn of the century, foreign immigrants made their way to the prairie from countries such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany and more.

Often immigrants would have to travel via boat and train to make it to their destination. They had arrived with the intent to be Americans, but that didn't stop many from holding onto a memento from the old country.

This week's selection offers just a few of the old world items on display at the Eddy County Museum. Other objects of interest include shoes and dress attire from Sweden, as well as a tea kettle brought to the U.S. by Mary Hass's mother from Norway. Other surely exist within the collections as well.

These simple items remain in spectacular shape and offer us a moment to imagine Eddy County as a destination- as a home to a rich diversity of people who each brought something very special to their communities.
