The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rocket volleyball team had one victory and one defeat in last week's action, and each match lasted four sets.
Barnes County North bested NR-S by 25-14, 16-25, 23-25 and 23-25 scores on Thursday, September 10, and the Rockets bounced back two days later with a 25-18, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-21 Saturday triumph against the Kidder County Wolves.
Both matches were non-Region 4 affairs, and were played at the NR-S Gym. The Rockets leaned heavily on the attack from senior hitter Kayahna Hopfauf in each instance. Hopfauf had 14 kills in the loss to the Bison, but made the biggest impact on the court against KCHS with a big stat line of 27 kills and four blocks.
Aggregated for each match, McKayla Waldo had a total of 11 kills and five blocks. Cassie Longnecker had 25 digs in the Saturday matinee to lead NR-S in that department, and Delana Thomas paced the Rocket back row in the BCN match with 12.
Dani Bjerke had 39 and 24 assists in the two matches and hit six aces from the service line in the loss for the Rockets.
Both combining for eight kills over the two-game swing were Mya Cudworth and Chloe Heinz. Cudworth finished with 14 digs against the Wolves and Heinz 11 in the Thursday showdown.
In a scheduling rarity which was a product of COVID-19 shuffling, the Rockets will face the M-P-B Thunder for their second regulation match already this season. This time, the venue shifts to New Rockford, and B-squad play begins the night tonight (Sept. 21) at 6 p.m.
On Tuesday, NR-S goes to Drake to tangle with the D-A Raiders (A-B-JH, 5 p.m.), and hits Highway 52 once again on Thursday for a match in Harvey with HWC.
The slate with the Hornets is of the full A-B-C-8th-7th grade variety, and starts at 3:30 p.m.
