Dynamic duo leads Rockets over Bearcats

If one blinked in the second quarter of NR-S' second game of the season against the North Star Bearcats, they might have missed three touchdowns.

A 56-point quarter output for both teams livened up what was a 6-0 score after the first 12 minutes, but in the end, it was the Rockets who prevailed, 50-34, in Cando Friday night, August 28. For the Rockets, now 2-0 in both Nine-Man Region 2 and the overall standings, it was the "Johnny and Kaden Show" starting in that wild second stanza.

After already throwing long touchdown passes to Haydon Meier (49 yards) and Nick Berglund (28) for NR-S' first two scores, Johnny Grann found Kaden Jensen three different times in the second quarter alone on scoring plays.

Jensen contributed another scoring pass in the fourth quarter, and answered the Bearcats' first score of the game with an 84-yard kickoff return. For the game, he had an astronomical 247 receiving yards on eight catches and had five total touchdowns.

Grann completed 19-for-26 for 424 yards of offense through the air and six scores in one of his better performances at the varsity level. North Star did their level best to stay within striking distance, making use of two touchdowns by running back Jeremiah Hill and a Dane Hagler to Hayden Hagler 22-yard strike near the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Bearcats added successful drives capped off by Tom Nikolaisen's 24-yard and Dane Hagler's one-yard runs. Hagler threw for 204 yards while going 17-for-36, 139 of those yards going to Hayden Hagler, and Hill eclipsed the 100-yard mark with 143 yards on 22 touches. NR-S' first big test came this past Friday night at St. John. The Woodchucks have two impressive wins to their credit and received votes in the latest Nine-Man football poll.

The Rockets, who now sit at fifth in the poll, will have their bye week before getting back on the field September 18 in Walhalla when they travel to face the North Border Eagles.
