Eddy County 4-H land judging team earns trip to nationals

Eddy County 4-H’s team of four juniors brought home a championship at the State 4-H and FFA Land Evaluation Contest in Dickinson on Thursday, Aug. 6.

Maria Becker, Nick Berglund, Mason Schuster and Macey Wobbema competed in the senior 4-H division, consisting of youth age 13-18 as of Sept. 1, 2019.

During the contest, youth evaluate the physical nature and capability of soils by looking at factors such as land slope, soil texture, color and depth.

4-H team scores are determined from the top three individual scores from each participating county’s team. There is no limit as to the number of participants a county may enter.

At the Aug. 6 contest, Maria Becker led her team with a third-place finish individually. Nick Berglund and Macey Wobbema were right behind Becker in the rankings, earning fourth and fifth places respectively. Mason Schuster, in his first land judging competition, finished just outside the top 10 at 11th place.

With its first-place win, the Eddy County team earned a trip to the national competition in Oklahoma City, Ok. on May 4-6, 2021. The team was advised by Tim Becker with assistance from Joel Lemer and Missy Hansen of Foster County.

The team from neighboring Wells County earned the championship in the senior FFA division and the trip to nationals. Regan Jones was the team’s high individual, as she finished second overall. Nicole Neumiller, Addy Neumiller, and Alex Heilman also earned gold awards, with Delaney Erfle finishing with the top silver award just two points from the gold category. The Fessenden-Bowdon team is advised by Lane Moellenkamp.

Update Aug. 18, 2020: We have been made aware that an important individual was overlooked with this article. Chandy Howard, Eddy County NDSU Extension Agent, is the official Eddy County advisor. She organized the team, answered 4-Her questions at the workout/practice sessions and traveled with the team to Dickinson on the day of the contest. Thank you, Chandy, for your leadership!
