Intern reflects on summer experience

On May 18, I joined the Transcript Publishing team in New Rockford for a summer internship. Studying Graphic Design in Business E-Commerce at the University of Jamestown, I was very eager to get started and learn the ins and outs of not only the design aspect of the Transcript but also the business side as well. My first week here I was introduced into journalism which wasn't necessarily something I was familiar with, but intrigued me and presented it challenges for me to overcome. The first stories I wrote for the Transcript were a very fun experience overall and seeing them in a newspaper was an achievement that I'll hold dear for the remainder of my life.

During my time at the Transcript, I did a variety of design work, including help logos for screen printing clothing, also helped create a couple of programs that were used for school and sporting events. I was given the responsibility to help with the newspaper layout each week, and it gave me a good idea of the entire process that goes into making a newspaper.

I was also responsible for updating the Transcript website every week with new stories and photographs. I enjoyed this as I want to learn more about websites and how to help businesses create and modify their websites in the future. There were also smaller tasks I took that are usually associated with being an intern such as cleaning up around the office, organizing, folding documents, delivering papers to the post office, etc.

As a whole, I would say that it was great experience in preparing me for what life holds next outside of school. It was also very helpful to be in a working environment, as I had never had any job experience before this. The New Rockford Transcript is a unique place to work as they are a small business that helps inform and entertain a great community that supports them.
