Obituary: Doris Ambers

Doris Mildred Ambers, 84, of Maddock, N.D. passed away Sunday, July 12, 2020 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford, N.D. Graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2020 at the Viking Lutheran Cemetery in rural Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Visitation took place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC recommendations for social distancing are encouraged. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Viking Lutheran Cemetery: P.O. Box 219 Maddock, ND 58348.

Doris was born November 12, 1935 to Victor and Gladys (Fugleberg) Berglund of Sheyenne, N.D. She was confirmed and baptized at the First Lutheran Church of Sheyenne. Doris attended schools in the Sheyenne area and graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1953. She then attended Minot State Teachers College, and began her career in education, teaching in several one-room rural schools.

On November 30, 1954, Doris married Stanton Ambers at the First Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. Several years later she returned to college during the summers to earn her bachelor's degree in education from Minot State University, and taught in a number of schools in Wells County, including Bremen and Cathay. In 1968 she began teaching in Maddock and continued there until her retirement in 1996, after 40 years in education. Doris and Stanton's son, Steven Michael, was born with a heart condition and passed away shortly before his second birthday.

They continued farming and ranching on their farm in Norway Lake Township until her husband's poor health caused them to retire, but continued living on their farmstead. Stanton passed away on September 13, 2000. Doris was a member of the Viking Lutheran Church, where she served as an officer of the WELCA. She was also a member of the NDEA and the North Dakota Retired Teachers Association.

Doris is survived by one sister, Gloria Rud of New Rockford; brother-in-law, Larry Stebleton of Minot; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Stanton Ambers; son, Steven Michael Ambers; parents, Victor and Gladys Berglund; brothers, Virgil (Marlys) Berglund, Larry Berglund, Charles Berglund and Roy Berglund; sister, Diane Stebleton; brother-in-law, Norris Rud; as well as a dear niece and nephew.
