New Rockford hosts Norsemen MC's 10th Annual Bikers Against Diabetes Ride

On June 27, New Rockford played host to the 10th Annual Norsemen Ride. Close to 200 individuals registered for the event, which directly supports children with diabetes.

The group convened downtown for registration at 9 a.m. By 11 a.m., the kickstands went up and the run was underway. After making stops in Minnewaukan, Maddock, Esmond, Harvey and Fessenden, the group returned to New Rockford for supper and raffle drawings at Buck-It's Bar.

Norseman Alex Brandvold of Maddock helped to coordinate the ride. He says, "It's great to get out on the bike, but this ride was about much more."

All of the proceeds – whether via registration fees, raffle sales or sponsorships – went to youth who have been diagnosed with diabetes. The idea to support diabetic youth came about some 15 years ago when the club was young and seeking out purpose. According to Brandvold, the group agreed to the cause of fighting diabetes, as many of the members had struggled with the disease since they were children.

Initially, the Norsemen made donations to the American Diabetes Association, but as time went on it became clear that there were young people from the area who would directly benefit from the extra cash, not to mention receive far-reaching support. The funds go directly to the children, who are often ages 13 and under.

While they could certainly use the money to go toward medical bills, there is nothing saying that they must. In fact one year, the Norsemen received a photograph of a very excited little boy who had just used his donation to purchase a go-cart. Brandvold explained that it's not about these kids being ill. It's about them enjoying their childhood despite their illness.

In a final note, Brandvold said, "This wouldn't be possible without the support of our sponsors, and special thanks to the community of New Rockford for hosting us."
