Sermonette: Make Your Life a Prayer

“Make your life a prayer.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 TPT

The Lord has been teaching me about prayer, a lot, lately. Prayer is a subject I think we can become ambivalent or casual towards. We know the spiel, “it’s important, it works, and it’s how we communicate with God.” But do we really understand the power of prayer? How by simply asking, God can change his mind and alter the future of a people, a nation and the world.

The world has become a crazy place and seems to be getting crazier by the day. We watch the news and see anger, violence, racism and hate. Honestly, the last couple of weeks have left me without words to even pray. As I turn to the word, I see God telling us how important prayer is in events that shake us to our cores. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, it says,

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

We see this happen in the Bible. Moses asks God to change his mind and let the Israelites live multiple times in the Old Testament (Exodus 32:7-14). If we can humble ourselves, seek God, and ask him, we can see how powerful prayer really is. With the death of George Floyd and other recent events, I know Jesus is our solution. He is the only one who can change hearts and minds, and prayer is how we can partner with God in that solution. So, let’s pray big, bold prayers! Let’s ask for healing over our country, wisdom for our leaders, and peace between nations. God isn’t confined to the prayers we pray but he does want us to ask. He wants to spend time with us and hear our hearts. Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. The same way I would sit down and have a conversation over coffee is the same way you can talk to God. He doesn’t want a show, he just wants you and your heart.

So, what does “make your life a prayer” really mean? It is simple, just pray. Throughout your whole day, talk to God. He wants to hear your thoughts and align your prayers with his heart. I challenge you, this week to pray- really pray. Set an alarm on your phone, wake up 30 minutes earlier and pray while you drink your coffee, or set aside even just 5 minutes of your lunch break and pray for your co-workers, your families and your town. Watch God use that time spent in prayer to impact your life.

Prayer. It isn’t as complicated as we make it. And it truly is something that is important to God.
