Vote by Mail: Eddy County Voters' Guide

It's Election Season, and this time things are a bit different. Here's our readers' guide to the June 9 election, so brush up and get out the vote!

This is considered the "primary" election for all county, statewide and national offices. All Eddy County residents must vote absentee for the above races. All candidates who receive the appropriate number of votes in the primary will be placed on the general election ballot. The general election will take place on Tuesday, November 3. Those elected to Eddy County offices will begin their terms in December.

The City of New Rockford conducts its election in conjunction with the Eddy County primary. However, June 9 is the general election for city offices, not the primary. The candidates who receive the most votes are elected and will begin their terms on July 1.

There are four seats up for election this June, including the president, or mayor. Stuart Richter is challenging Calvin Packard for that seat. For the two open four-year terms, current commissioners Kelly McKnight and Justin Ystaas have filed. A two-year unexpired term is also open, and no one has filed a petition for that seat. There are also two seats open on the New Rockford Park Board. Incumbent Kristi Swenson filed for re-election to her seat, and Judy Allmaras is campaigning as a write-in candidate for the seat she currently holds.

The City of Sheyenne conducts its own city election separate from the county primary. Auditor Karla Jacobson said Wednesday that the polls will be open at Ostby Hall on June 9 from noon - 7 p.m. Three residents have filed petitions for the two open seats on the Sheyenne City Council, each a four-year term. Voters will choose two from among incumbents Kenneth Ames and Richard Hoffner and challenger Kim Brown. There are also two open seats on the Sheyenne Park Board, and no one has filed for either seat. As of Wednesday no individuals had announced write-in campaigns for those seats either. Candidates who receive the most votes in this election will be duly elected, as this is the general election for city offices, not a primary.

Sample ballots are printed on page B3 of this issue, along with an official Notice of Election.
