March 24 is Diabetes Alert Day

American Diabetes Association Diabetes Alert Day is observed annually on the fourth Tuesday in March. Diabetes Alert Day is a one-day “wake-up call” that focuses on the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of understanding your risk. While some risk factors may be out of your control, such as family history, ethnicity, or history of gestational diabetes, there are lifestyle factors that you do have control over.

Regular physical activity of 150 minutes per week has shown to be your best defense at preventing diabetes. Exercise improves how your body utilizes its own insulin and decreases insulin resistance. Both aerobic and strengthening exercises have been shown to decrease the development of type 2 diabetes. It is important to find an activity that you enjoy so you will stick with it.

Making some changes to your diet can also decrease your risk of diabetes. Things like drinking less sugar-sweetened beverages and eating regular meals consisting of complex carbohydrates, proteins and fats can help with blood sugar control. A simple thing like filling half of your plate with vegetables can make a big difference overtime.

Unfortunately, not all type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented; however, if you know that you are at an increased risk, you can decrease that risk by incorporating some health-promoting behaviors around eating and exercise.
