School board considers student suggestions

The NR-S board of education members heard a report from student leaders who offered some suggestions to improve the high school experience.

“More physical activities during school.” They suggested the school invest in treadmills or stationary bikes. They also noted they’d like new extracurricular activities like a math club or science club. Finally, in class, they’d like to be given less busywork, and instead have more meaningful assignments.

“It is interesting to hear that students want more involvement and more activity. It’s a good thing,” says secondary principal Avolt Baumbach.

Principal Baumbach is revisiting the concerns regarding the flex-mod scheduling implemented this fall. While students seem to appreciate the new-found flexibility that comes with the schedule, the instructors have been stretched a bit thin. The result will offer ample resource time and a bit more structure.

The high school will be seeking an English and Language Arts teacher for the 2020-21 school year. The board approved a one-year leave of absence for Tara Seward to pursue a Master’s Degree in Reading Instruction.

The board conducted the second reading and approved revisions to policy GCAB. Previously, the policy read, “In cases where more than one student has the same numerical grade point average, all students with that average will be given the same rank. The next highest average will assume the next rank position that will indicate the number of students having a higher rank.”

It now reads, “Class ranking will be determined by the following criteria if a tie exists: 1. GPA on a 4.0 scale; 2. GPA of 5.0 scaled classes or number of high school credits earned in AP or dual credit classes.”

In a second spot, “Any graduating senior who has maintained a 3.5 grade point average on a 5.0 scale shall be considered an honor student from the New Rockford-Sheyenne Public School District No. 2.” was changed to, “For the purpose of high school graduation, students earning a 3.5 GPA on a 5.0 scale will be designated honor students. Students earning a 4.0 or higher on a 5.0 scale will be designated high honor students. High Honor Students will be invited to participate in a leadership role within the graduation ceremony. Opportunities to participate will be designed by the administration.”

Superintendent Jill Louters received her formal evaluation from the board. She received a “satisfactory” rating with 277 of 336 points.

In other business, Mike Schaefer and Alyson Myhre agreed to serve on the NR-S Community Foundation.

The next regular meeting for the NR-S School Board of Education will be Monday, April 13 at 7 p.m.

A special meeting will be held on Monday, March 16 at 7 a.m. regarding the second gym project.
