Duchscherer finishes third at State Wrestling

NR-S sophomore Matthew Duchscherer took home a third place finish at the State Class B Individual Wrestling Tournament in Fargo Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 20-22.

Competing for the Carrington program, Matthew, wrestling in the 120-pound weight class after taking fifth at 106 pounds last season, completed a 25-8 season and helped the Cardinals to a fifth-place team finish in the individual portion of the event with 126 team points. Of that total, he was responsible for scoring 19.5 on his own.

Duchscherer won four of his five matches at the State B. Seeded fourth at 120 coming into the tournament, he earned a second-period pin over Garett Zink of Linton-HMB in his opening match, then scored a technical fall (victory of 15 points or more) against Grafton's Chance Burns which ended 55 seconds into the second period.

His only loss came to the eventual state champion in the bracket, as he suffered a 25-second defeat by fall against South Border's Marshall Lindgren.

In the consolation bracket, Duchscherer finished strong with two victories, starting with a 2-minute, 21-second pin against Ellendale/Edgeley-Kulm's Isaiah Carruth. His final match came against second-seeded Jakob Hudson of Northern Lights (Rolla/St. John/Rolette-Wolford), and Matthew earned a 7-4 decision victory.

He also wrestled in the Cards' two matches in the Class B dual tournament, winning his first-round match against New Salem-Almont's Riley Doll by 10-2 major decision, and scoring a 5-minute, 11-second pin in the consolation round dual over Octavio Alvarez of Minot Bishop Ryan.

This season, Duchscherer was also the Region 2 individual champion at 120 pounds, winning all three of his matches by taking two pins and an 11-5 decision win over Burns for the title.

Matthew is the son of Todd and Renae Duchscherer of New Rockford.
